Promises and Possibilities
at FivePine Lodge & Conference Center
$450
5-day workshop (includes lunches)
Monday - Friday, September 25 - 29, 2017
9-4 pm
Take an in-depth look at the arrangement and organization of visual elements that make a successful composition or design. Study the raw elements of design, and see how they can be put to use in the process of quiltmaking.
The class will begin with interactive discussion around the notion that the basic design elements are used in all design universally. Using slides and other visual material, we will study the purposes and different types of design and the process of design before looking closely at the elements of design, namely, line, mark, texture, shape, and color.

5-day workshop (includes lunches)
Monday - Friday, September 25 - 29, 2017
9-4 pm
Discover the design and color world! Open up while composing quilts or fabric collages with layers of luscious silk organza and crisp cotton organdy. We will begin by producing a gem-like palette of translucent fabric with water-based paints and then proceed to the design wall, where new colors and shapes will emerge as the translucent fabrics are layered. We will also produce a technique sampler notebook as we experiment with traditional Korean bojagi, tucks, and other machine and hand-sewn seams to explore the design possibilities different finished and raw edges provide. Design options will expand with discussions of ways to incorporate surface stitchery, printed imagery, and opaque fabrics into your fabric compositions.

Vive La Difference! -
Contrast in Composition
5-day workshop (includes lunches)
$460
Monday-Friday,
September 24 – 28, 2018 9-4 pm
Add vitality, variety and subtlety to your work by sharpening your understanding and use of the many forms of contrast, key to successful art and design.
Discover how to give your compositions a more dynamic and sophisticated look.
In a series of short manageable exercises we will explore contrast of value, color, line, shape, texture, size, scale and mood. Working with dark and light, big and small, hard and soft, warm and cool, straight and curved, calm and busy, rough and smooth, organic and curvy, you will find ways of adding visual impact and spark to your work.
The class is accompanied by exciting visual support with slides, books and actual textile examples. A short discussion will give a daily focus. You will be guided in making your own individual small daily paste-ups in fabric / paper. From these you will develop a larger quilt top.
Beauty, pleasure, and the good things of life are intensified, and perhaps only exist, by reason of contrast. (Walter J. Phillips)

Map Play - Using the Basic Principles of Design
5-day workshop (includes lunches)
$460*
Monday-Friday,
September 24 – 28, 2018 9-4 pm
Come play!! Create artful map studies through creative exercise that will help you understand the basic principles of design. An art quilter's most valuable asset is his or her creativity — and it needs to be reinforced through an understanding of design thinking. In this workshop you'll find creative thinking exercises. Beginning with an exercise related to the seven principles of design --work instinctively with color – explore creativity through experimentation. All works are small, enabling you to develop ideas quickly and freely.
You will create paper map-like collage compositions through a series of quick "hands-on" exercises and subsequently make fabric constructions. The goal of this class is to allow you to create little spontaneous works that can become the basis for a final small quilted art map. You will develop these pieces using freehand scissor cutting, layering of varied fabrics, and other techniques to create an interesting work of art.
The primary prerequisite is a desire to have fun through the creative process and willingness to trying something new. This workshop produces mapping samples that can be used in later quilted, painted or stitched works.
* There will be a materials fee of $10 per person to offset costs of instructor provided supplies. You will be making relatively small pieces, therefore you will not need large quantities of fabric, but you will need an assortment of colors and values with which to work.

Inspired by a photograph, sketch or mental image, create your own abstract or representational forest scene using free-form and curve-piecing techniques. Study light and shadows and achieve depth by playing with shapes and color gradations.
This class builds upon my beginners' CURVES AND MORE class, taking the curved piecing to the next level where we create multiple curved sections and join them into one coherent piece, your own forest.
